Itinerary

Welcome to Portland, the famed “City of Roses.” Located on Oregon’s northwestern border, Portland sits in a spectacular natural setting between the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, just 126 km from the Oregon Coast. A year‑round destination, the city is known for its sustainability, creativity, and welcoming community. With excellent public transit, tax‑free shopping and expansive urban parks, Portland offers a diverse mix of attractions. After arrival, make your way to your centrally located hotel. From here, you can easily explore the city’s eclectic neighbourhoods on foot—wander to Pioneer Place shopping district, browse the endless stacks at Powell’s City of Books, or stroll through Washington Park. This vast park is home to the Oregon Zoo, the forested Hoyt Arboretum, the historic International Rose Test Garden, and the tranquil Portland Japanese Garden.

Today you’ll see Portland from a new perspective with a guided Downtown bike tour by Pedal Bike Tours. Ride along well‑designed bike lanes with views of the skyline, river, and famous bridges before heading into Old Town’s historic cast‑iron district and bustling Chinatown. Continue through the Pearl District, where former warehouses now house galleries, boutiques and restaurants beneath soaring modern residences. For lunch, try one of Portland’s iconic food cart pods—clusters of diverse eateries offering global flavours. Treat yourself later to Voodoo Doughnut’s legendary bacon‑maple creation or a gourmet option like Blue Star’s blueberry bourbon basil. In the afternoon, unwind at Knot Springs in inner Northeast Portland. Their “Knot Springs Ritual” includes exfoliation, a series of warm and hot soaks, a cold plunge, sauna, steam, and even restorative nap time, an indulgent way to recharge.

This morning, drive east toward majestic Mount Hood. About 113 km from downtown Portland, the journey can be taken via Interstate 84 through the Columbia River Gorge or Highway 26. Either way, you’ll eventually reach the Mount Hood Scenic Byway, which circles the mountain’s edge with breathtaking views. Mt. Hood is the highest peak in Oregon and the second‑most‑climbed mountain in the world after Japan’s Mt. Fuji. This dormant volcano is a paradise for hiking, camping, fishing and even near‑year‑round skiing. On your return to the Portland region, stop in historic Oregon City, Oregon’s first capital and the end point of the Oregon Trail. Ride the 39m Municipal Elevator, the only “vertical street” in North America, for the best views in town. End your day with a visit to Oregon City Brewing Company, reflecting the local spirit of craftsmanship and innovation.

Continue your journey into the Tualatin Valley, where rich agricultural heritage blends with modern artisan culture. Follow the Quilt Barn Trail, a series of 59 painted wooden panels that share the stories of local farms. Visit the Beaverton Farmers Market for fresh local produce, handmade goods and live entertainment. Pick your own seasonal berries at Smith Berry Barn, or choose from outdoor activities such as cycling the Tualatin Valley Scenic Bikeway, kayaking the peaceful Tualatin River, or walking the forested Banks‑Vernonia State Trail—Oregon’s first rails‑to‑trails project, stretching 33 km. Round out your day with a tasting at one of the region’s 30 wineries, perfectly paired with the valley’s serene landscapes.

Today you’ll journey toward the legendary Oregon Coast 585 km of rugged cliffs, forested headlands, sweeping beaches, and charming small towns. Travel through Tillamook, known for its fertile farmland and celebrated dairy industry. A visit to the Tillamook Creamery is a local favourite. For a coastal detour, stop at Kelly’s Brighton Marina on Nehalem Bay for crabbing, fishing, or simply enjoying the peaceful waterfront. Continue south toward Newport, stopping in Pacific City along the Three Capes Scenic Loop. With Cape Kiwanda as its dramatic backdrop, Pacific City offers beach activities, scenic viewpoints and the iconic Pelican Brewery just steps from the sand.

Newport perfectly embodies the quirky, creative soul of the Oregon Coast. Stretching between Yaquina Bay and the Pacific Ocean, it features an active working waterfront, cultural districts, historic sites and coastal beauty. Explore the lively Bayfront area with its galleries, seafood restaurants and fishing fleet. Wander quaint Nye Beach, once the Oregon Coast’s premier holiday spot and still a haven for artists. Visit the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and the 28m Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the tallest active lighthouse in Oregon. The Oregon Coast Aquarium offers world‑class exhibits and immersive walk‑through tunnels showcasing vibrant marine life. And don’t miss the striking art‑deco Yaquina Bay Bridge on Highway 101.

Depart the coast and head inland to Oregon’s renowned Wine Country. The Willamette Valley is home to two‑thirds of Oregon’s wineries and is internationally celebrated for its exceptional Pinot Noir. Travel the Mid‑Willamette Valley Food Trail, exploring historic farms, artisanal producers and culinary experiences. Stop at Midway Farms in Albany for local goods, cooking classes or seasonal events. Visit Honeybrine Market for handmade products, and tour Thompson’s Mills, Oregon’s last water‑powered mill dating back to the mid‑1800s. Families and history lovers will enjoy the Albany Carousel & Museum, featuring hand‑carved animals and antique mechanisms. End your day with wine tasting at the award‑winning Willamette Valley Vineyards Tasting Room, offering sweeping vineyard views, outdoor spaces, fireplaces and a 65‑ft tower overlook.

Your Oregon self‑drive adventure concludes today. Drive back to Portland to return your rental car and prepare for your onward journey.
